The games are too short for me to care about any individual game, and I've no interest in climbing a ranking ladder, and the gameplay is so simple that I was able to faceroll everything I came accross - as someone who is used to games like AoE 2, Starcraft, etc. I could have just said "Gameplay", and people would have understood what I was talking about - but I said "Core Gameplay Loop" to specify that I'm talking about actual process of gameplay isn't rewarding enough to my tastes to keep me interested. I've been using the phrase for some years now - I chat with different developers fairly regularly so little "Industry standard" terminology creeps into my vocabulary.ĭesigners are very passionate and conscientious people, so they develop very specific terminology when talking about games that helps them break down an analyze how an experience feels. If you play a game that aims to remove the execution from something like Starcraft, play for just a tiny bit and don't really understand how it works, you may be tempted to say it's just "dumbed down" and give up on it. So to sum that up, "The biggest hurdle this game is going to face, is getting players to put in that little bit of time before realizing there is more going on here than meets the eye". But then once you get passed that point, you will hopefully realize that the lack of stuff guiding you, is now a lack of stuff holding you back from exploring the strategy space of the game. It's harder to jump into, because you are going to lose quite a lot of games just building up a sense of heuristics without a whole lot else guiding you. Like in Starcraft most players can identify "oh if I get better at clicking, I will be a better player" or "if I practice this build order I found online, I will be a better player", where as in this game it's "if I get better at understanding how the map layout should effect my 'build order', I will be a better player". There aren't a lot of easy to grasp points of improvement.
